About us

Communities First – Butetown  Riverside Grangetown (BRG)

Welcome to Communities First BRG!

Communities First BRG is a ‘cluster’ that works with residents, community organisations, business and other local organisations to help improve the wellbeing of communities. We believe that involving local people in all aspects of this work is an essential to the development of this area.

We support our most disadvantaged communities living in specific areas of Butetown, Riverside and Grangetown (BRG) with a focus on Education, Health and Prosperity.

Watch our film to learn more about the history of this area.

What do we do?

For people living within the BRG areas, we support local residents to improve their standard of living through providing opportunities to learn, be healthy and get into work.

Background Information

Community First areas are determined by the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD). More information about the Welsh Government’s Agenda is here “Tackling Poverty agenda“.

All of our projects respond to the key Communities First themes of Healthy, Learning and Prosperous communities and our staffing structure and locality based approach is designed to deliver the programme across the new cluster and complement Cardiff Partnership Board What Matters Strategy work streams, Families First, Flying Start and Neighbourhood Management programmes.
Communities First is a nationwide ‘anti-poverty’ programme which aims to reduce the gaps in education/skills, economy and health between our most deprived and more affluent areas.

Communities First is a “Community-Focused Anti-Poverty Programme” which focuses on community involvement.  It is funded through Welsh Government  via Cardiff Council as lead delivery body and supported by the South Riverside Community Development Centre (SRCDC).

Communities First has three strategic objectives:

  • Prosperous Communities
  • Learning Communities
  • Healthier Communities

The Minister for Local Government and Communities has stated that they especially want to see an increased emphasis on ensuring that the most vulnerable people are engaged meaningfully with the programme.
